About Dr. Smith

Dr. Smith was born and raised in Memphis, TN. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami, where he earned degrees in Chemistry and Exercise Physiology. He then attended the University of South Florida in Tampa for medical school before returning to Memphis for his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Tennessee/Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics. After residency, Dr. Smith completed his fellowship in orthopaedic foot & ankle surgery at the University of California Davis (Sacramento, CA) and the Reno Orthopedic Center (Reno, NV).

Dr. Smith is a board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon as recognized by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Smith treats all conditions involving the bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments/connective tissues of the lower leg, ankle, and foot. Some examples of conditions commonly treated by Dr. Smith include fractures and athletic injuries of the foot and ankle, arthritis of the foot and ankle (including total ankle replacements), ankle instability (frequent ankle sprains), disorders of the Achilles tendon, deformities of the foot and ankle (such as collapse of the arch or “flatfoot deformity”), Charcot arthropathy (a special type of arthritis commonly seen in diabetic patients), and select conditions of the toes such as arthritis of the big toe, bunions (also known as “hallux valgus”), and hammertoes. He also treats most common fractures throughout the body.

With his background in exercise science, Dr. Smith understands how important activity and movement are for improving overall health. He therefore strives to get patients back to their active lifestyles as quickly and effectively as possible. For some patients, this may mean returning to sports or athletic endeavors, but for many patients this may mean simply walking with less pain. With his broad training and expertise in a variety of treatments for the foot and ankle, both surgical and non-surgical, Dr. Smith is able to tailor treatments to meet the demands of each patient’s lifestyle.

In his spare time, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his wife and their miniature schnauzer, Monty. He also enjoys exercising, following the Tampa Bay sports teams, and outdoor activities such as snowboarding, paddle boarding, and fishing.
