About Dr. Cann

Dr. Brett Cann is a double board-certified family medicine and non-operative sports medicine physician. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology, summa cum laude, from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, followed by his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his family medicine residency at the University of South Florida–Morton Plant Mease program in Tampa, Florida, and subsequently completed a fellowship in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida. Dr. Cann practiced in Rhode Island since 2021, serving as a team physician for the University of Rhode Island D1 athletics program and as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University before moving back to the Tampa Bay area in 2026.

Dr. Brett Cann is board-certified in Family Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Cann provides comprehensive non-operative sports medicine care, with expertise in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, athletic/sports-related pathologies, overuse conditions, concussions, and acute and chronic medical conditions affecting active individuals. He also has extensive training in ultrasound diagnostics and therapeutics which he utilizes in providing regenerative medicine and other musculoskeletal treatments. As a team physician, he has cared for athletes across a wide range of sports at the club, college and professional levels. His approach emphasizes accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment plans, injury prevention, proper rehabilitation, and helping patients safely return to the activities they enjoy. He believes in partnering with patients to understand their goals and developing practical, evidence-based treatment strategies tailored to each individual.

Dr. Cann has extensive experience in sports medicine event coverage and athletic care, having served as a team physician for organizations including the University of Rhode Island, University of South Florida, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies, East-West Shrine Bowl, Boston Marathon, WNIT, Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships, and multiple high school athletic programs. He has also been actively involved in medical education as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he taught medical students via formal lectures and hands-on musculoskeletal workshops. His research and academic interests have included musculoskeletal medicine, osteoarthritis treatment, physical activity effects on overall health, concussion assessment/management, joint/tendon injections, and post-surgical orthopedic outcomes. His research has been presented at national and regional medical conferences, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, with work also published in the medical literature.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Cann enjoys staying active, traveling and spending time pursuing his many interests. He is an avid rollerblader and golfer. He also enjoys snorkeling and is a dedicated Green Bay Packers enthusiast.
