Doctor Profile: Hassan R. Mir, MD, MBA, FACS

Dr. Mir: My name is Hassan Mir and I’m an orthopedic trauma and fracture specialist at our level one trauma center. And that’s where we take care of the worst of the worst injuries and people who are really in bad shape and come to us and need a great deal of help. It can be people who have multiple injuries to their arms, their legs, their pelvis, or somebody who simply falls while rollerskating or playing basketball and breaks an ankle or a wrist. And I, I see those patients who are less severely injured a lot of times in my clinic, in the office, but the ones who are really badly injured come to us at the trauma center. The reason I chose orthopedic trauma, in particular, is because you never know what your day is going to be like and people come to you really at their worst moment. When it comes to a lot of our other subspecialties, it’s elective, meaning people choose when they have their knee replaced or their shoulder done.

But with trauma, you don’t choose when you wreck your car or wreck your motorcycle. You’re coming to us in a situation where you’re scared and you don’t know what’s going on and you’re injured and it’s my job to calm you down and get you through that process and let you know that we’re going to get you healed up and get you back to work. And back to life. I love to treat patients the way I would want my own family or friends treated. And I always try to help them through the decision-making process and let them know that that’s what I’m doing. That uh, when it comes to different options whether they need surgery or not, that I’m going to try to guide them the same way I would feel if they were my own family member.

I’ve been married for over 10 years now and uh, we have three young children. I’ve got a nine year old daughter, a six year old son, and then a five year old daughter. And I just love spending time with my family. Every free moment I get is, is devoted to my wife and kids. I was actually born and raised in West Virginia and my dad’s an orthopedic surgeon. So I’ve kind of followed in his footsteps along the way. I, uh, went to medical school in West Virginia and then by residency in Memphis, Tennessee at the Campbell Clinic. Uh, and followed that up with you in my fellowship training here at Florida Orthopedic Institute. Florida Orthopaedic Institute is definitely one of the premier practices in the country. And one of the things that sets it apart is in order to really know that, you know something, well, you should try to teach it. And Florida Orthopaedic Institute has been teaching fellows for a long time and has some of the top fellowships in the country and recently has partnered with the University of South Florida residency program and is now training all the residents at, at USF. And as part of the reason I’m excited to come back and join FOI is, you know, running the training program for USF and, and it’s an exciting time.
