August 02, 2013, Bay News 9: Dr. Chan talks with the parents of Ireland Nugent about her recovery and the challenges she will face along the way.
Another surgery for the toddler who lost part of her legs in a lawnmower accident earlier this summer. Ireland Nugent’s mother says she’s been experiencing pain while wearing her prosthetics and cannot wear them for longer than 15 minutes at a time. Ireland’s doctor took a look today and says, it’s a pretty typical problem for patients like Ireland. The most common, consequence, if you will, of amputation in kids is bony overgrowth. They’ve got so much healing potential and they just form bone in places out on their stump that they need to have modified to help across that. Okay. Ireland will have surgery in a few weeks, but for us, she will celebrate her third birthday. Her family has a big party planned for her next weekend.
