My name is Seth Gasser. I am a sports medicine specialist, orthopedic surgeon at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute in Tampa, Florida. Well, I’ve actually been interested in sports medicine orthopedics since I was pretty young, probably as early as 12 or 13 years of age and was fascinated by the profession and from that point forward. I don’t know that I ever really thought about pursuing another career during my lifetime. I’ve been in practice here at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute now for 20 years. And throughout that time I had the ability to take care of several high schools and other local and national sporting events such as the Outback Bowl and those types of things. The Gasparilla distance classic, I was the team physician for the mutiny and for the University of South Florida. We were the team physicians for the lightning for the first seven years of their existence here in the Tampa Bay area, which I’ve also been the team doctor at the University of Tampa. And now starting this year we’re going to be as well the team physicians for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Most surgeons will tell you that’s the favorite part of your job. And I’d probably say it’s one of the more enjoyable parts of my profession. I enjoy as well the interaction with the patients and being involved in the immediate diagnosis and treatment of our athletes. My main sport was lacrosse. My son particularly is involved in basketball and lacrosse and I tried to stay active in those. So it’s fun for me to see it from both sides. Well, the most satisfying thing is just the ability to see patients who have significant problems and you’re able to restore them to an active, healthy lifestyle that makes them happy. So that’s what gives us fulfillment. I can’t see in retrospect ever wanting to do anything else.
