About Dr. Thompson
David P. Thompson is a board certified Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder arthroscopy with special emphasis on Anterior Cruciate ligament reconstruction, patellar instability, rotator cuff repair, shoulder stability operations and Sports Medicine.
Dr. Thompson received his undergraduate here locally at the University of Tampa. He is a high honors graduate of the University of California Salk Institute in San Diego and Medical School University of South Florida College of Medicine. He did his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute.
He has been with Florida Orthopaedic Institute/Orthopedic Associates of West Florida for over 24 years. Dr. Thompson has had the privilege of being the team physician for many athletic teams from high school to professional. His highlight was being the medical director and team physician of the Tampa Bay Storm for 10 years. Currently, he teaches residents and fellows as an adjunct professor at the University of South Florida School of Medicine. He has received the Community Professor of the Year from the residents. He is currently the team physician at Calvary Christian and Mitchell High School. In the past he was a team physician for the NFL Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Mutiny, University of South Florida Athletic Team, and Leto and Plant High School Football Teams.
Dr. Thompson limits his practice to the care of active patients with a goal of returning them to their full potential. Dr. Thompson himself is very active and enjoys all sports.
