FOI and Tampa General Hospital First in World to Use New Surgical System for Complex Pelvic Injuries

Patients with complex pelvic and hip socket injuries now have access to a new advancement in orthopedic trauma care, thanks to a collaboration between Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI), Tampa General Hospital and USF Health. 

On August 17, 2026, Hassan R. Mir, MD, MBA, FACS, performed the first surgery using the new EVOS Pelvic and Acetabular System at Tampa General Hospital. Dr. Mir, director of Orthopaedic Trauma Research at Florida Orthopaedic Institute in partnership with Tampa General, was also one of four physicians who helped design the system in collaboration with Smith+Nephew. 

The FDA-cleared system was designed to give surgeons more options to match the unique anatomy and fracture pattern of each injury, which may support more precise fracture repair, improved stability, and smoother recovery.  

Pelvic and acetabular fractures requiring surgery can result from significant trauma, including serious car accidents and falls. These injuries can be especially challenging to treat because of the complex anatomy of the pelvis. 

“Every pelvic fracture is different,” said Dr. Mir. “We designed this system with the goal of helping surgeons navigate these complex procedures more effectively, giving them more options to restore anatomy and stability.” 

By helping surgeons approach these technically demanding procedures with implants designed for the anatomy and needs of pelvic fracture repair, the system has the potential to streamline portions of surgery and support patients as they begin the recovery process. As with any serious injury, treatment and recovery vary based on each patient’s injury and overall health. 

This milestone highlights the strength of the longstanding partnership between Florida Orthopaedic Institute, Tampa General Hospital and USF Health. Through collaboration in patient care, research and education, physicians are helping bring new orthopedic innovations from development into the operating room; giving patients access to advanced treatment options when they need them most.
