Dr. Sellman: My name is Jeff Sellman and I am a primary care sports medicine doctor here at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. I had a long path compared to most people, but I started right out of high school, the University of Colorado at two years of undergraduate work. And then I actually stopped and joined the military and was in the Army for many years. In addition to residency and family medicine, I also completed a year-long specialty training in sports medicine. So what a primary care sports medicine physician does is take care of any ailment or problem that afflicts the athlete from skin disorders to asthma and then the traditional musculoskeletal problems, sprains, strains, and fractures. So I have to say that I just get excited about athletes, sports and musculoskeletal medicine in general. And this is not my first introduction to Tampa. I love it. I could not wait to get back to Florida. So it feels like I’ve returned home. My approach to treating patients and is really instead of a doctor-patient relationship, it’s more of a coach-player relationship. I like to empower people to take responsibility for their own health care through knowledge. The most satisfying part is when someone comes back to me and said, this is what I found. This is what I did. If the patient leaves here in a good place, then that’s just icing on the team.
