You know, it’s kinda funny they got me reading this story. As we get older, we get more brittle. Seniors can be at a major risk for injury. So a team of local doctors has developed a program to prevent big falls for people over 65. 10 News reporter Bobby Lewis back out on the road in Palm Harbor where seniors strong means staying healthy.
The Tampa Bay Rays may not be calling her, but Jean Doron is ready just in case. I’ll hop pitches down to, well I may need to look to me. She’s a little bit of a behavioral problem, but we got through that. Agile as ever, so we’ve got you good and warmed up even at 85 and even after a fractured ankle, two minute warm-up, she’s ready to take on her active lifestyle. Thanks to some big changes in a new program.
Is this important for seniors to do?
I think it’s very important because you know I have friends too and I can see that everyone has a problem. I wanted to do something to help permit those things. So Florida Orthopaedic Institute, Dr. Chris Grayson developed Senior Strong program to help seniors build strength to keep from falling and to avoid injuries in the first place.
All of this has really helped. It changed it a great deal because with a particular fracture I was not able to put my foot down at all, so that meant I was in a wheelchair for like six to eight weeks.
Now, why is the Senior Strong program so important?
Well, for one, if you’re 65 or older this year you have a one in three chance of falling and one of the most common injuries when people fall that age is fracturing a hip, but only one in four 25% of people will make a full recovery.
Jean fractured her ankle last November and since starting the program so she feels 10 times better and says she can now live the life she’s always wanted. Even if we do a perfect surgery, those statistics still come into play and it’s not as much I can do to help the patient once injury has already occurred. All in all, I feel stronger and better and younger. On the road in Palm Harbor. How old do you feel? Maybe 65.
