James B. Billys, M.D.

I believe that physician-patient communication is necessary for a successful outcome. I make sure that my patients understand their issues and all of the treatment options available to them.

Dr. Billys is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and fellowship trained in spine surgery. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Dr. Billys completed his internship in general and thoracic surgery as well as his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the Duke University Medical Center.  In addition to his fellowship training in spine surgery, Dr. Billys received a second fellowship in immunology research and a third in hand and micro vascular reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Billys has done extensive research on minimally invasive spine surgery and serves as a Principal Investigator at the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) where he is responsible for conducting clinical trials and their outcomes.  He continues to do research on degenerative spine conditions and is an affiliate assistant professor at the University of South Florida.

In his spare time, Dr. Billys enjoys spending time with his family.

In 2008, Dr. Billys had to fuse L-4 to S-1. The moment I met him I felt good he was very straight forward pulled no punches. 2/13/08 he preformed the fusion L-4 to S-1 with a  axial lift. It had ups and downs the first year. But it is 9/7/16 I am upright and function in everyday life. Their will be no other doctor to touch my back or any member of my family’s but Dr. James Billys.  Some complain the wait is long to see him but I am here to let you know it is worth the wait.

Once again, I have to praise Dr. James Billy’s for getting to the heart of my neck issues. What I find so compassionate about Dr. Billy’s, is he gives you the truth. He wants nothing more than to help people! He did not push big surgeries on me and he ensures you get the best choices, and that you understand each and every step. I have had three good spine docs, but no one compares to Dr. Billy’s. Thanks for all you do for me and Tim.

It’s been a few years since my back surgery. I had a herniated disc in the L5-S1 region of my back. Three things stick out the most from my experience with Florida Orthopedic Institute and Dr. Billys.

  1. When I went to the appointment at Florida Orthopedic the doctor I saw did not specialize in the condition I had, herniated disc in the L5-S1 region. Due to this he was able to get me to see Dr. Billys in the same visit even though I was not scheduled to see him. I cannot say enough thanks for being able to see Dr. Billys that day as it got the ball rolling on some much needed pain relief.
  2. After doing the require tests; MRI, nerve conduction study, etc.. Dr. Billys didn’t seem to mind taking time to explain any question I asked for thing like recovery time, chance for failure, possible re-occurrence etc.. He may seem short and to the point but he give you all the information you need and more.
  3. The biggest thing is on the day of my back surgery I did not bring my MRI to the hospital the surgery was being performed at, the hospital did not mention the need to bring them in. Dr. Billys and team waited until some brought them to the hospital.
It’s been a few years since my surgery and I’m still pain free, I would recommend Florida Orthopedic institute to treat anyone with the type of pain I was having and I would especially recommend Dr. Billys for spine related problems.
