Florida Orthopaedic Institute Announces High School Athlete of the Week Program for Hillsborough County Students

Tampa, Fla. – July 9, 2018 – The Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) is proud to announce the creation of a new Hillsborough County high school Athlete of the Week program, recognizing male and female high school student-athletes for contributions both on and off the field. The program will name its first recipients this September and will run throughout the academic year.

FOI CEO Joe Gordon believes the new awards program is a natural extension of the work FOI is doing with student-athletes throughout Hillsborough County.

“We are excited to begin this new awards program recognizing the best and brightest athletes in Hillsborough,” said Gordon. “At FOI, we take our partnership with these schools seriously, and serving as team physicians to keep student athletes’ safe is integral to our mission of keeping people of all ages healthy and active.”

FOI has the largest and most advanced sports medicine program in the region and provides team coverage for organizations throughout Tampa Bay. They have served as team physicians for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Tampa Bay Storm, University of South Florida, University of Tampa and most Hillsborough County High Schools.

The FOI Athlete of the Week Award will be given to two student-athletes each week, and each award has its own criteria.

The FOI Athlete of the Week – Team Player Award is given each week to a Hillsborough County high school athlete whose coaches feel does his or her best to put direction into action, make a significant contribution to the team, and continuously works to improve their skills, attitude and training.

Athletes who earn the FOI Athlete of the Week – Leadership Award must exemplify strong relationship building skills, shows excellent initiative on and off the field, and serves as a role model for his or her peers.

Coaches and Athletic Directors throughout the county are encouraged to nominate student-athletes during the academic year. Nominations can be made at the FOI website, here.
