Adult Orthopaedic Reconstruction and Arthritis Surgery Fellowship -

This program participates in the SF Match system.

Fellowship Instructors: Kenneth Gustke, M.D.; Thomas Bernasek, M.D.;and Steven Lyons, M.D.

Duration: 1 Year (August 1 to July 31)

The goal of the Adult Reconstruction Fellowship at Florida Orthopaedic Institute is to prepare the Fellow for an orthopedic surgery career with a subspecialty in the management of simple and complex arthritic deformities of the hip and knee. The Fellow works with the attending in the management of patients in an academically oriented private practice at Florida Orthopaedic Institute. The emphasis of the fellowship is placed in learning management options and the surgical techniques for even the most difficult reconstructions. This includes minimally invasive and computer assisted replacements and revision arthroplasty, as well as alternative procedures such as osteotomies, arthrodeses, and arthroscopic debridements. The attendings perform over 1,500 joint replacements per year which includes many complex revision arthroplasties.The Fellow will also participate in research projects.

Clinical Spine Fellowship

Fellowship Instructors: Antonio Castellvi, M.D.; John Small, M.D.; Marc Weinstein, M.D.; and James Billys, M.D.

Duration: 1 Year (August 1 to July 31)

Number of fellows: 1 per year

The Center of Spinal Disorders at Florida Orthopaedic is comprised of 4 highly trained surgeons, 1 PMR, 1 Interventional Spine, and 1 Pain Management. Excellence in quality of patient care, education and research in the advanced techniques of motion preservation are the goals.

The fellow will be exposed to a high volume of spinal pathology, including cervical, thoracic and lumbar procedures. Emphasis for the fellow will include evaluating degenerative, deformity, scoliosis and trauma cases, treatment and rehabilitation. This education will include extensive hands-on experience in surgery. Opportunities for surgical interaction include minimally invasive spine procedures, kyphoplasty, adult and pediatric deformity correction, and motion preservation and total disc replacement.

Research opportunities are abundant and emphasis is on preservation of motion in the spine. The fellow will have the opportunity to participate in multiple practice settings with a comprehensive fulfilling education.

Foot and Ankle Fellowship

Fellowship Director: Arthur Walling, M.D.

Duration: 1 Year (August 1 to July 31)

Number of fellows: 2 fellows per year

Rotations: 6 months with each physician

The Florida Orthopaedic Institute Foot and Ankle Fellowship is designed for graduates of approved orthopedic surgery residency programs. The program covers the entire spectrum of foot and ankle disorders with emphasis on adult reconstruction, trauma, and post-traumatic complications. Didactic instruction will include lectures, conferences, anatomy dissection, and journal club. The Fellow will have access to and be encouraged to participate in basic science research, and will be expected to complete at least one article for national publication.

Applicants must have completed an accredited Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program prior to the Fellowship and must be Board eligible. The duration of the program is one year, and begins in August.

The Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education Hand Fellowship Program is closely aligned with Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI), the largest orthopaedic group in the state of Florida. The goal of the program is to improve fellow’s performance in a diverse programming covering all aspects of upper extremity surgery including pediatrics in a high volume setting. The model for this fellowship is a one-on-one apprenticeship with close supervision and interaction with fellowship trained attending staff. Fellows are the primary assistants to the attending staff during surgery and assist in supervising USF residents on rotation. Fellows evaluate in-house consults and both private and clinic office patients. The broad clinical experience is facilitated by close relationships with three primary institutions: Tampa General Hospital (TGH)- a level 1 Trauma Center which services Florida’s west coast, Shriners Hospital for Children of Tampa- servicing inpatients under the age of 18, and Florida Orthopaedic Institute Surgery Center-astate of the art facility housed on FOI's main campus exclusively serving FOI outpatients and surgeons.

Also housed on the campus is the Foundation for Orthopaedic Research and Education (FORE) which operates independently from FOI, servicing all areas of research and education. Fellows will benefit from access to a biomechanical research laboratory for testing of materials, a surgical skills laboratory for training on the latest surgical techniques using cadaveric specimens and a fully staffed team of coordinators. Fellows will play an active role in research, preparing for weekly conferences and monthly journal club meetings.Each fellow is required to complete at least one scientific paper on a subject related to the hand and/or upper extremity suitable for publication in a major journal or presentation at a national meeting. Applicants must have completed a residency in a general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, or plastic surgery program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A valid Florida medical license is required. The fellowship is ACGME accredited and participates in the match program beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year. Two one-year fellowship positions are open for the 2010-1011 academic year and will be filled outside of the match.

Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship

Rotations: 6 months with each physician

The shoulder and elbow fellowship at Florida Orthopaedic Institute provides exposure to a high volume tertiary referral practice exclusive to shoulder and elbow reconstruction and fracture management. With over 2700 new patient visits, 13,000 clinic visits, the fellows are given ample exposure to the entire spectrum of shoulder and elbow disorders, including shoulder arthroplasty, arthroscopy, open reconstruction, fracture management, elbow arthroplasty, arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and fracture management. The Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship provides an opportunity to participate in over 1,200 cases per year split evenly between arthroscopic and open surgery. Fellows play an active role in research conferences held biweekly and monthly journal club. Participation in ongoing clinical and biomechanical research projects is encouraged. The fellow will take general orthopedic emergency room call for a community hospital (University Community Hospital) 1-2 times each month.

This program is part of the ASES fellow selection process.

Sports Medicine Fellowship Program

Fellowship Director: Seth Gasser, M.D.

Duration: 1 Year (August 1 to July 31)

The Florida Orthopaedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship is designed to be a comprehensive learning experience for the postgraduate orthopedic surgeon. Fellowship education will include extensive hands-on experience in arthroscopic and surgical reconstruction of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. The Fellow will also learn appropriate evaluation and non-operative treatment of a wide variety of sports-related orthopedic conditions.

In addition, game coverage for the University of Tampa and St. Leo University intercollegiate athletic teams, and local high schools will provide further educational experience. Involvement in clinical and/or basic science research is required. Weekly time throughout the year is allotted to develop or continue prospects under the supervision of our research director.

Trauma Fellowship Program

Fellowship Director: Roy Sanders, M.D.

Duration: 1 year (August 1 through July 31)

Number of fellows: 4 fellows per year

A high volume of pelvic and acetabular surgery, calcaneal fractures, complex polytrauma, as well as reconstructive surgery, including corrections of malunions using both AO and Ilizarov techniques is seen. A large practice of foot and ankle reconstructions and chronic osteomyelitis is also part of this program. A wealth of well-documented clinical material obtained through our trauma registry permits ample opportunities for research.

Applicants must have completed an accredited Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program prior to the Fellowship, and must be Board Eligible.
